Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)

A Severo Ochoa center since 2014

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is an international research centre devoted to excellent interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of engineering and life sciences. By putting together fields like nanomedicine, biophysics, biotechnology, tissue engineering and information technology, IBEC generates new knowledge and innovations for health. The institute currently has 23 research groups, 336 researchers and stafffrom 38 different countries.

IBEC has the versatility to generate excellent research and, at the same time, work with industry to develop new diagnostic and treatment systems, with three major application areas: Bioengineering for future medicine, Bioengineering for regenerative therapies, and Bioengineering for active ageing.

IBEC was established in 2005 by the Catalan Government, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). IBEC was awarded its first Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence Award in 2015 and renewed it in 2019. IBEC is also accredited since 2019 with the TECNIO Seal, as a center that offers differential technology and increases innovation rates.
