The Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) is a multidisciplinary research center focused on cutting-edge research in functional advanced materials in the fields of energy, electronics, nanomedicine and application fields yet to imagine.
Our scientists contribute to develop five major Research Lines:

- Oxides for New Generation Electronics
- Tunable and Low Cost Molecular Electronics
- Bioactive Materials for Therapy and Diagnosis
ICMAB, which is already more than 35 years old, keeps its initial enthusiasm in generating new knowledge in materials science research, and transferring it to the society and the industry.
It is located at the University Autonoma de Barcelona campus, next to Barcelona, and surrounded by other research and technological centres, with access to many state-of-the art equipment and scientific facilities. Moreover, with over 350 members of more than 35 countries, it is a very attractive place to work for young researchers.
Our R&D activities are strongly backed up by state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation and specialised technical staff available in our scientific services, including a 10,000 class cleanroom (Nanoquim Platform), which are open to interested parties, whether these are academic or from industry. We are highly active in training our researchers in communication and technology transfer, and to date we have created or helped create 4 spin-off companies.
In addition to two Severo Ochoa accreditations of excellence, we are the CSIC Institute with more H2020 European projects (in terms of number of projects and funding). Our researchers have been awarded with 15 European Research Council (ERC) grants (as of March 2022), we coordinate the first MSCA-COFUND of the CSIC on Advanced Functional Materials (DOCFAM), and participate in many FET, EIC, MSCA projects and COST actions, among others. Our researchers also participate in many educational activities and collaborate with different universities in training students at the graduate, master and PhD level.
