INPhINIT 2020 Incoming Fellowship: "Properties of exoplanets and brown dwarfs with the James Webb Space Telescope."

The Doctoral INPhINIT Incoming fellowship offers 3-year contracts for early-stage researchers of any nationality to carry out a PhD project in research centres accredited with the Spanish Seal of Excellence Severo Ochoa, María de Maeztu or Health Institute Carlos III, on STEM disciplines. Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC-INTA), Unidad de Excelencia “María de Maeztu”, offers the following PhD position: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be launch in 2021. Due to its characteristics, it will play a revolutionary role in the characterization of exoplanets, specifically their atmosphere and the search of Earth analogs. The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which works between 5 and 28 micron, will be key in this endeavor. We are part of the MIRI team and have access to the guarantied time (GTO). We are involved in two related lines: protoplanetary disks and exoplanets. Within the last one, we are in charge of the characterization of the mid-infrared properties of a sample of brown dwarfs, which will be used as proxies for the properties of Jupiter-like atmospheres. This project will be centered on: i) the preparation of the exploitation of the JWST GTO related to brown dwarfs and exoplanets, including preliminary observations and the development of tools; ii) analysis of the JWST GTO data once the observatory is launched; iii) access and analysis of CHEOPS (the ESA satellite for exoplanet characterization) data; iv) participation is several working packages within the PLATO mission. The research project has a long-term component, which includes an extensive network of international collaborators. Thus, it offers a promising career after the PhD completion.
