INPhINIT 2020 Incoming Fellowship: "JWST Spatially Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy of Star-forming Galaxies / JWST-GALAXY Fellow."

Application deadline:

The Doctoral INPhINIT Incoming fellowship offers 3-year contracts for early-stage researchers of any nationality to carry out a PhD project in research centres accredited with the Spanish Seal of Excellence Severo Ochoa, María de Maeztu or Health Institute Carlos III, on STEM disciplines. Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC-INTA), Unidad de Excelencia “María de Maeztu”, offers the following PhD position: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the top priority NASA project for the exploration of the Universe, in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The mission is at a very advanced stage, being its launch scheduled for March 2021. The PhD candidate will be integrated into the JWST group that is investigating the local analogs of star-forming galaxies at cosmological distances. These investigations require the calibration, analysis and interpretation of optical and near-infrared spatially resolved spectroscopy with the ESO Very Large Telescope optical (MUSE-AO), and near-infrared (SINFONI) integral field spectrographs in (IFS). In addition, the candidate is expected to take part in the simulations of JWST data, and contribute to the subsequent analysis of the MIRI and NIRSpec Early Release Science programs. We are seeking an excellent and highly motivated candidate willing to pursue a PhD thesis in the field of extragalactic astrophysics with the most advanced ground- and space-based optical and infrared instrumentation. The candidate should hold a Master degree in Physics or Astrophysics. A good command of programming in Python and familiarity with software tools for the analysis of astrophysical data (PyRAF, TOPCAT, ds9, etc) is required. Prior experience (Master Thesis) in the analysis and interpretation of optical or near-infrared spectroscopic data, or previous experience with instrumentation on telescopes will be an added value.
